The Rodeo Drive (Highway 53) Corridor Improvement project is now complete. The Town of Ponoka hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony, celebrating the official grand opening and completion of extensive improvements to Rodeo Drive (Highway 53) in Ponoka. Over the past two years, the Town of Ponoka partnered with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors to complete extensive improvements and rehabilitation along Rodeo Drive between Highway 2A and 38 Street.

Construction Updates

What improvements have been completed on Rodeo Drive?

Improvements along the roadway include:

Pavement resurfacing and concrete repairs;
Upgrades to the 46 Street intersection, including new traffic lights, paving, concrete, lighting and realignment of that intersection;
Intersection improvements at 45 Avenue;
Expansion of the Town’s multi-use trail network along Rodeo Drive with a new paved trail extending from Highway 2A to 46 Street;
Closure of 54 Street access at Rodeo Drive;
Stormwater infrastructure upgrades;
New upgraded streetlighting;
Fencing and landscaping; and
Wayfinding signage and the renaming of the roadway to Rodeo Drive.

How was the project funded?

Why was the improvements to Rodeo Drive necessary?

The upgrades addressed the deteriorating pavement conditions, reduced ongoing maintenance challenges and improved overall roadway safety. As a major gateway to our downtown and to the Town’s largest tourist attraction, the Ponoka Stampede, the improvements will help drive long-term economic growth for our community.

The Rodeo Drive Corridor improvements align with Council’s strategic priorities of investing in Town infrastructure and building a vibrant community. The project was also based on recommendations in the Town’s Transportation Master Plan and Urban Framework Master Plan.
