Summer in Ponoka!

The Town of Ponoka’s Spring Festival was held on June 13 from 3 to 8 p.m. in the curling rink at the Ponoka Arena Complex (4410 - 54 Street). Due to rain in the forecast, the event was moved indoors.

This free event offered fun-filled activities and entertainment for the whole family, including:

  • Bouncy houses;
  • Glitter tattoos;
  • Storytime in the park;
  • Food trucks;
  • Balloon animals; and
  • Much more!

The Town of Ponoka partnered with the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association once again this year to host a Canada Day fireworks display on Monday, June 30 at about 11 p.m.

The fireworks were staged at the Ponoka Stampede grounds, which offered a central location where the fireworks could be seen throughout the community. 

Citizens could also view the fireworks from the Ponoka Arena Complex (4410 54 Street) parking lot.

A powwow showcase

As part of National Indigenous History Month and in the spirit of reconciliation, the Town of Ponoka helped facilitate the return of the Fourth Annual Tipi Village to Ponoka during Stampede Week on June 26 to 29.

The event was hosted by Louis Bull Tribe with participation by members of the Ermineskin Cree Nation, Samson Cree Nation and Montana First Nation. Each day, the Tipi Village ran from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and featured the following:

  • A Grand Entry;
  • Greetings and speeches from elders and neighbouring First Nations;
  • A powwow show case at 3 p.m. daily;
  • Indigenous storytelling;
  • Indigenous artwork and culture; and
  • Tipi Village visitors can stroll through the tipis and talk with elders.

The Tipi Village was set up in the ball diamonds area behind the Ponoka Arena Complex (4410 54 Street), directly across from the Stampede grounds. This event was free and open to the public.

Downtown Ponoka offers numerous boutiques, antique shops and restaurants.

The third annual Fall Fest ran on Friday, September 5, in downtown Ponoka and featured an evening of live music and delicious food from various local food vendors. The event was held along 51 Avenue (between 50 Street and 51 Street) and in the parking lot.

The Battle River Valley trail system has about 10 kilometres of trails that wind along the east banks of the scenic Battle River in downtown Ponoka.

The trails are ideal for walkers, joggers, cyclists and in-line skaters to enjoy the benefits of a beautiful, natural area.
