Town of Ponoka Council Meeting Highlights - June 24, 2026

Regular Meeting of Council:
7.1 Land Use Bylaw Amendment No. 04-2026
Council passed first reading of Land Use Bylaw Amendment No. 04-2026 and selected August 12 at 7 p.m. for the public hearing date.
The proposed Land Use Bylaw Amendment is for lands currently designated as an Urban Reserve (UR). An application was submitted to the Town related to 5000 62 Avenue (Lot 35, Block 16, Plan 082 0167). The application seeks to create a Direct Control (DC) District for the purposes of future subdivision of the site to accommodate a four-storey apartment development, consisting of two buildings, with shared indoor and outdoor amenity spaces.
7.2 Council Meeting Dates
Council approved the revised meeting dates for Regular Council and Priorities and Initiatives Committee meetings from July to October 2026:
- Regular Council meetings are scheduled for the second and fourth
Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. Exceptions include:
- July and August, during which only one Regular Council meeting will be held.
- The second meeting in September has been rescheduled to accommodate Council attendance at the Alberta Municipalities Conference.
- Priorities and Initiatives Committee meetings are scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The exception is July when no Committee meeting is scheduled.

7.3 Municipal Policing Committee
Council approved the appointments of the following members to the Ponoka Municipal Policing Committee contingent on the completion of a satisfactory enhanced security check:
- Catherine Akins for a three-year term effective June 24, 2026 to June 23, 2029
- Deborah Hycha for a three-year term effective June 24, 2026 to June 23, 2029
- Carolyn Gossen for a two-year term effective June 24, 2026 to June 23, 2028
- Christopher MacKinnon for a two-year term effective June 24, 2026 to June 23, 2028
- Chevi Rabbit for a two-year term effective June 24, 2026 to June 23, 2028
- Councillor Cal David for a three-year term effective June 24, 2026 to June 23, 2029
- Councillor Carla Lloyd for a three-year term effective June 24, 2026 to
June 23, 2029

7.4 Rescind Policy HUM-001-017
Council rescinded Policy HUM-001-017 Out-of-Scope Employee Policy, which will be replaced by Administrative Policy AP-28 Out-of-Scope Employee Policy.
As part of the initiative to update and reclassify polices in accordance with the Governance Document Framework Policy, Administration has identified the Out-of-Scope Employee Policy as appropriate for administration through an Administrative Policy.
10 Correspondence Items
Council accepted the following correspondence as information:
- Mayor Ferguson received a letter from the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada about the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act (Bill C-14).
- The Town of Ponoka received a thank-you letter from the Fort Ostell Museum regarding the $7,000 in funding provided by the Town to supplement the museum’s operating budget for the 2026 year.
- Mayor Ferguson
received a letter from Minister of Municipal Affairs, Dan Williams, thanking
Council for their discussion on wastewater infrastructure with him at the 2026
Alberta Municipalities conference.
13 Closed Session
Council accepted Councillor Teri Underhill’s resignation from the North Red Deer Water River Services Commission and accepted Mayor Kevin Ferguson’s appointment to the committee.
