Town of Ponoka Council Highlights - May 26, 2026

Regular Meeting of Council:

7.1      Land Use Bylaw Amendment

Following a Public Hearing on the matter, Council passed a motion to amend Land Use Bylaw 03-2026 by replacing the text in Section 1 to read ‘outdoor storage yard on Lot 5, Block 40, Plan 2421134.’ Council then approved second and third reading of the Land Use Bylaw 03-2026 as amended.

8.1      Code of Conduct Communication to Committees

Council approved a Notice of Motion to provide a communication of committees in regards to the rescinding of Policy GOV-002-006 so that all public members are aware of provincial Bill 50 and the upcoming impact of Bill 28.

8.2      Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Policy

Council approved Policy CP-32 Access to Information and Protection of Privacy, thereby rescinding Policy GOV-01-011.

This policy establishes an updated governance framework for access to information and the protection of personal information within the Town. It reflects the requirements of Alberta’s new Access to Information Act and the Protection of Privacy Act, and replaces the existing Town of Ponoka policy, which was developed under previous provincial legislation.

8.3      Request for Sponsorship – Chicks for Charity

Council approved a sponsorship of the Chicks for Charity Ladies Champagne Brunch 2026 as a Reserve Ranch Toast Sponsor in the amount of $500, to be funded from Council’s advertising, promotions and sponsorships budget.

8.4      Bill 28 – Public Library Services

Council approved a motion to direct Administration and the Mayor to prepare a letter to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and the local MLA outlining Council's concerns regarding Bill 28 and its potential impacts on municipal governance and public library services.

Bill 28 proposes to introduce province-wide requirements that may affect access to library materials and expand provincial authority into areas traditionally managed by local library boards. 

8.5      Flag and Lighting Display Policy

Council approved the CP-29 Flag and Lighting Display Policy as amended.

The purpose of Policy CP-29 is to ensure that flags on Town property and lighting on the exterior of the Ponoka Civic Centre are displayed in a consistent and appropriate manner.

8.6      Ponoka Adaptation and Sustainability Action Plan

Council passed a motion to adopt the Ponoka Adaptation and Sustainability Action Plan (dated May 2026), as presented, to provide a long-term strategic framework that advances the Town of Ponoka's environmental sustainability goals, strengthens climate adaptation and infrastructure resilience and positions the municipality for future grant funding opportunities.

An Adaptation and Sustainability Action Plan is a long-term strategic document that helps the Town of Ponoka understand and prepare for the impacts of changing climate conditions, while identifying opportunities to improve environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

8.7      Ponoka & District Chamber of Commerce’s Pancake Breakfast

Council approved a sponsorship for the Ponoka & District Chamber of Commerce’s Pancake Breakfast on June 30 in the amount of $1,000, to be funded from Council’s advertising, promotions and sponsorships budget.

8.8      Council Meeting Dates

Council passed a motion to reschedule regular Council Meetings to the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, and to reschedule Priorities and Initiatives meetings to the third Wednesday of each month beginning June 10, 2026 until the organizational meeting in October 2026.

11       Correspondence Items

Council passed a motion accepting the following correspondence as information. The Ponoka and District Health Foundation sent a letter thanking the Town of Ponoka for its donation in support of the Helipad project.

12       Information Items

Council accepted the 2025 Town of Ponoka Annual Report as information.
